Primate researcher Elizabeth Griffin, 22, contracted the disease after an infected rhesus monkey flung waste matter into her eye.

The unnamed 53-year-old veterinarian from Beijing died on May 27, just a few months after he dissected two dead monkeys as part of his experimental primate research job in March.

Officials said the worker, who suffered from headaches and a fever, had been studying the monkeys to develop pharmaceuticals, the outlet reported.

In 1997, a researcher died from the virus after bodily fluid from an infected monkey splashed into her eye.
