Riften is her husband and he comes back suddenly propelled in status and a favourite of the king, and despite being offered a divorce and a marriage to the princess, he respects his vows with Maxi and he wants to treat her as his wife; there are a few things that tick me off about his character like how he basically rushes her to have sex and ignores her worries about it being painful.
And despite all the complains I have with the main couple, I also understand the misunderstandings and misconception about what it's beloved wants due to their past experiences and personalities, so I consider they have a great potential and the execution of the concept is in general well done.
